Happy Hump Day!!!
Hope you all are having a joyous day so far. I want to start by saying thank you to my 20 subscribers! You guys rock, thank you for supporting me through my journey. This is going to be a very long walk, but I’m excited to have you guys come along with me. This is a learning process for me and I have various stories that I know I want to share with you all.
Let’s jump into our topic of the day. LIFE. Just Kidding. Well kind of. We’re going to talk about choosing your path today. Most of you know, I am a Senior at the Unviersity of Houston which means graduation is nearing, which means choosing a career is nearing. I currently work at Tesla full time which is amazing and I have truly enjoyed my time there! However, I have always had big dreams about working for myself, creating my own schedule, etc. I wouldn’t say I’m an entrepreneur, but I think I am definitely an intrapreuneur. Meaning, I want to create something new and my own, but then I want to stay with it.
So as much as I LOVE Tesla and will definitely own one some day, I doubt I can take Elon’s position. Graduating college is scary. Our entire lives we go to school. From 4 years old until about 22, we go to bed every night knowing that when we wake up we’re going to spend 8 hours of the next day in a class room learning about a million different things. So it’s scary to think that one day after 18 years we’ll wake up and not have to go to school. Unless you go to grad school and in that case kudos to you because as scary as it is, I couldn’t do another 4 years of this!!!
Really though, I’m scared and I’m sure I’m not the only one. What if I choose the wrong the path. What if I start and decide I don’t like it. When you’re in school, no one cares if you jump around from job to job because it’s a given that we all have no idea what we’re doing and we’re just trying to find out what we like. Once you graduate they look down upon you if you’re constantly moving from industry to industry. There’s this stigma that not knowing makes you look weak and unprepared. It sucks!!
So here it is. My three step plan/advice! . Picking a career can be very tricky, there are a lot of factors that come into play. The first step, in my opinion is understanding yourself. Figure out and write down your values. If family is important to you, then don’t move too far away. If security is important than make sure you do something that has a clear path. Figure out what YOU need and that will help your search.
Second, what do you like? What interests you to the point that you will never want to stop talking about it and all your friends will never want to see you. Okay that’s extreme I know, but you get my point. You have to love what you do. I know it sounds cliché, but it’s true, if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.
Lastly, don’t overthink it. Make sure it fits those categories and if it does, do it! Try it out and if you don’t like it, try something new. Granted, you won’t be able to get a new job every 6 months, but if you don’t like it, stick it out for a couple of years. Enjoy the journey. Every experience will teach you something so take what you learn and use it in your next endeavor. Never give up on your dreams and always keep pushing forward.
That’s all I’ve got for today. I’d love to hear your thoughts or even talk to you about any career conflicts you’re having. Comment below or send me a message! Let me know what you guys want to read about in future blogs. I want to write about things that interest you!
-Keep Shining!
